This woman felt the need to critique, complain, give unrequested negative comments, and dole out advice on how she would do things differently. Finally, having had enough, the recipient of this constant unsolicited feedback finally bit back. What did she say?

"My crap (she used another word) is better than your nothing."

Now, I'm not sure if that was an original statement, but it was new to me and I immediately understood her message behind it. What she meant was that if you think what I'm doing doesn't meet your standards, it's still better than your nothing.

It can be so easy for people who are not doing anything to have something to say about what you are doing.

They are:

not moving forward in their business

not advancing in their career

not managing their money well

stuffing their face with donuts while telling you to start running instead of walking

Do you know anyone like this:

They don't like your logo, but don't have one of their own.

They want to tell you how to manage your relationships when they have broken families and unhealed hurts.

They want to tell you how to get ahead in life when they haven't made any strides for themselves.

They are quick to point out mistakes, missteps, and mishaps not realizing that they don't have any because they aren't doing anything.

To hear these people talk, they want you to believe they have it going on. But when you look a little closer, and check their action, there is no substance. They want to talk as if they have it all together, but they are really those who have nothing. And for those that are in the trenches everyday - working...doing...taking action - feel free to tell that person, "my ___ is better than your nothing".

Of course, the key to this is knowing which person YOU are in the scenario.
I couldn't be happier!

Now, before you jump to conclusions about the client, let me just say that I LOVE this client. Not only have we been friends for a while, but when she became a client, I've been honored to help her start and grow her new business.

The reason why I issued a refund lies completely with me.

A couple of months ago, we were talking about a service she needed that not only could I do for her, but at the time, didn't mind doing. It wasn't part of my core business (coaching, speaking, consulting), and it wasn't what got my juices flowing, or a service that I would want to expand to other clients. It was just something I thought would be fun to work on, add value to my client, and help her move forward in this particular area of her business.

But after a couple of months of working on this special project, I began to feel stressed about it. Because it wasn't a part of my core expertise, everything took longer than anticipated. Because it wasn't what got my juices flowing - the sweet spot of my business - I would hesitate to work on it or put it off until all of my other projects were done.

The results?

I became frustrated, stressed, and angry - with myself. What seemed like a good idea at the time had turned into a nightmare. And last night, I decided to face the truth. I didn't have the time, energy, or the real expertise to continue with the project.

Has that ever happened to you? You started something with good intentions, but somehow, it got way off track? You soon realized:

I really don't have time for this.

This isn't fitting in with my overall goals.

This isn't serving me or my client.

This isn't turning out like I thought it would.

I don't have the skills, tools, or expertise to really do it justice.

I just need to let go and move on.

Is this happening to you right now? Do you have a client, an organization, a project, a committee...anything...that you've now realized is not where you need to be spending your time, giving your effort, or exerting your energy? If yes, you should consider taking a deep breath and letting them know. Once you do, you will feel an incredible sense of relief and freedom.

I made that call last night.

She completely understood - and while we won't be working on THAT project together, she's still a coaching client and moving forward, doing incredible things in her business.
Some said they just "knew" they had to be here because this is exactly what they needed in their lives right now. Others have said they had to move appointments, figure out child care, and make arrangements at work. A few said this is the first time they will be traveling alone, and while they are a little nervous, they were coming anyway. For some, the decision to come was considered RADICAL for them, but they set aside their fear because they are ready for massive changes in their life.

That's what this conference is all about!

She reasoned she had gotten her education, held professional jobs, and was now a leader in her organization - having the title, staff and salary to go along with it. Yet, how was it that these other people seemed to be happier, more fulfilled and richer than her? And, adding to that agitation, was the fact that these people were 10+ years younger.

Kim explained that the capitalistic system is built to reward people for taking risk. A capitalistic financial system doesn't reward equally - and sometimes it doesn't reward at all. The people my friend was referring to had taken great risks. And while they had some ups and downs, they were experiencing a tremendous payoff for those risks.

Now, that may not seem fair to some people, but that doesn't make it less true. And that analogy can also be true beyond financial success - it can be true in business, relationships, your career, finding peace and creating balance in your life. To gain any of those things to the extent that you want them, it will require risk on your part. That leads to the obvious question:

What risk are you willing to take to get what you want?

When I posed this question to my friend, she paused. Risk - taking a gamble - letting it all ride. Those were concepts that made her very uncomfortable. She related it to gambling - and not only had she never been one to roll the dice, pull on the one armed bandit, or double down on blackjack, she wouldn't even step foot in the casino. That's when I explained that risk should be calculated.

Standing at the craps table and rolling the dice puts you at risk to lose big or win big - but in life, you want to put yourself in a position where the risk is calculated. A loss may be possible, but the payoff could change the trajectory of your life.

Risk, just like doing something RADICAL, is relative. It has a different definition for each person. Risk for someone could be finally changing their hairstyle, ordering something they've never eaten at a restaurant they've never tried, outlining why they deserve a raise and then go and negotiate for it, or joining a professional or social group filled with people they want to get to know.

Risk could also be separating yourself from some people in your life that don’t align with your beliefs, values or goals and focusing on developing more nourishing relationships. It could be tapping into your savings to start a business - or stopping the financial drain by closing a business.

Whatever area in your life you are feeling a little restless with, a little dissatisfied with, a little disappointed with - think about the risk you may have to take to change it. Then decide if you want to stand at the table and roll the dice.
It's so interesting to hear other people's story - who they are, what they have been through, what they have accomplished, and what some of their goals are.

There was the woman who had beat breast cancer and was there to get back into working out. In kickboxing class, she saw the punching bag as cancer and beat the crap out of it - just like she had done with her own illness.

There was the 72 year old grandmother of 35 who hiked and attended all the classes. She shared how she started a private school that had become one of the top schools in her area. Now, she was planning to open a summer camp that would combine theatre and agriculture. She proves every day that it's never too late.

There was the fitness instructor who had conquered her own health challenges by losing 95 pounds 3 years ago and was now helping others realize their full potential by encouraging them to stay focused on their goals.

There was the southern sweetheart with the charming accent and kind heart who encouraged everyone in every class. Working hard, pushing herself, and bringing everyone along with her.

There was young woman who always felt awkward and unaccepted and left feeling more confident and assured that she could do and be anything she wanted.

And there were countless others who climbed mountains for the first time, ran on a treadmill for the first time, picked up a weight for the first time, got in a swimming pool not caring how they "thought" they looked in a swimsuit, and those who just amazed themselves everyday with their strength, their courage and their ability to do more than they ever thought possible.

I felt honored to be around so many wonderful people and gleen from their drive, motivation and inspiration. It was an unforgettable experience.

One of the trainers at the resort, Sam Poueu, looked very familiar to me the first time I saw him. Why? Because he was from Season 9 of The Biggest Loser. And as he had us sweating, huffing and puffing yesterday, he talked about staying focused, not giving up and doing what most people won't do to get what we want.

He went on to say that one question he often gets continues to catch him off guard. What's the question?

"Was it hard to be on the show and lose 142 pounds?"

I immediately understood what he was saying. As a life coach, I am no longer surprised by people's belief that things should be easy. That they shouldn't have to sacrifice, be uncomfortable, make difficult choices, be disciplined, and...do I dare say it...work hard.

I don't know if it's the media, savvy marketing, or our instant gratification syndrome that makes many of us believe that things shouldn't be hard. That somehow, people who get what they want don't have to do as much work as we would have to do to get that same thing.

Here are two definitions I came across for the word "hard":

Involving a great deal of effort, energy, or persistence.

Performing or carrying on work with great effort, energy, or persistence.

Name one successful person who hasn't given a great deal of effort to their cause. Name one successful person that didn't need to maintain persistence to get the desired results. Name one successful person that didn't have to push through setbacks, challenges and barriers to get the goals they set. And I would venture to guess that every new level of success brings on new efforts and persistence for the next goal.

If you don't believe me, ask them. Schedule a meeting with your CEO and ask how hard it was to get there. Have a conversation with an elite athlete and ask them if the training was hard. Talk to an academy award winning actress and ask them has their journey been hard at times. Have coffee with a successful entrepreneur and ask if starting their business was a piece of cake. Read the biography of someone you admire and decide if their life was a cakewalk.

If you want something - you must expend the energy. You must give 100% effort. And you must maintain your persistence. Because guess what? It's hard.

Oh...and Sam's answer to that question: a definite YES!

I have conversations all the time with people I meet at networking events, business groups, and at social gatherings. And when they find out I'm a personal development coach, they really come strong.

I get to hear about the business they are starting, the book they are writing, the non-profit they plan to launch, the new job they are going to get, the degree they want to pursue, and the vacations they want to take. I can hear their excitement, feel their energy, hear the faith and belief in their words, and get drawn in by their conviction to success. But inside, I know the truth.

Most people won't come close.

It's sad...but true. Most people will continue to live in that stage of having a goal, sharing a goal and even convincing themselves that SOMEDAY they will get that goal.

You know the people I'm talking about. Every time you talk to them, they are talking about the same goal and when you ask how much progress they've made since the last conversation with them....the excuses come:

Well, you know, my job keeps me so busy.

Well, you know, with the economy, it's been hard.

Well, you know, I just haven't found the time.

Well, you know, I was planning on doing X, but Y got in the way.

Well, you know, the person that was suppose to help me didn't come through.

The part that really amazes me is that most people actually believe that their excuses are legitimate. They believe the lie they tell themselves because it makes them feel better and provides the excuse they need to accommodate their lack of progress. Giving explanations and excuses make them feel better, because it prevents them from facing the truth. What truth should they face?

They are scared.
They are afraid.
They fear failure.
They fear success.
They don't know where to start.
They don't know who to ask for help.
They doubt their talent.
They question their gift.
They fear the unknown.
They wonder what people will think.

Now, I know that you are not that type of person. I know that you are actively moving towards your goals and making real progress. I know that you are not still talking about the same things you talked about last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.

But just in case you know someone who may be stuck, help them see that it's time to get moving. That it's time to do something different. Get the information they need, the support they need, the accountability they need, the belief they need and the focus they need to get it done...so they can begin to finally have a new conversation with you.
I simply wanted to help people define success for themselves and then have the guts to go after it.

Fast forward to 2011.

This past weekend I got a call from an executive I worked with at that company. While we saw it each periodically over the years, we didn't really keep in touch. So I was surprised when I got a call from him. After catching up with what was happening in each other's lives, he asked me about the Get RADICAL Women's Conference and said that his wife and daughter planned to attend.

Then, he said something that really touched me. He said that he remembers when I left the company and talked about pursuing my dreams. There were others he'd known over the years who talked about taking a different direction, going after a goal, or pursuing one of their passions - but they never quite made the leap.

I was one of the few people he'd seen actually do it. He reminded me that so many people talk about what they are going to do. But so few people actually do it. He said he couldn't believe I did it and that he was proud of me.

What about you? Are you the one alwasys talking? Talking about...
Writing a book?
Going back to school?
Traveling to a foreign country?
Volunteering to help others?
Starting a non-profit?
Recording an album?
Going for a promotion?
Starting a business?

Don't be one of those that wish they did. Be the one that's glad they did.
Since January 1, maybe you've started working out again. Maybe you've started living by a budget. Maybe you've started working on that book again. Maybe you've started getting a full night's sleep again.

Getting "back on the horse" can be challenging. You may find yourself a little rusty at whatever you've started doing again.

Such was the case with a woman I talked with today.

I'm spending time in Malibu at The Biggest Loser Resort and one of the coaches told us that she normally bikes to work, however, with the rains over the past month or so, she stopped. And even though the weather cleared up, she never quite made it back on her bike.

But with the New Year, she finally decided to get back in the groove. So yesterday she decided to ride her bike to work. Having not biked in a while, she realized on the way home that one of the hills she used to breeze up seemed too steep this time so she got off. As she pushed her bike up the hill, she saw another bike rider coming down.

Slowing down, the biker asked her if everything was okay. A little embarassed, she barely looked up, replied that all was well and that she was just a little out of shape. His reply? "Well, you don't get in bike riding shape by walking beside it. You get in shape by riding it."

Annoyed, she fully turned, ready to reply with a sarcastic remark when the biker took off his shades. That's when it hit her. The biker giving her advice was Lance Armstrong.

While she was temporarily speechless, he held out his hand and introduced himself. Finally able to find her voice, she explained again that it had been a while since she rode. Then, he gave her some advice on positioning her seat and then offered to do the hill with her. She happily accepted and he rode with her all the way home.

This story highlights a couple of lessons:

Lesson #1: Don't put off any longer what you should be doing. Get back on that horse.

Lesson #2: Since it's been a while, allow yourself some time to get back in the groove.

Lesson #3: While it may be difficult at first, don't get frustrated and definitely don't stop.

Lesson #4: It's in the doing that amazing things can happen that will inspire and motivate you beyond words - like taking an afternoon bike ride with Lance Armstrong - winner of the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times

What horse do you need to get back on?

It can be so easy to start peeking over in other people's yard and begin comparing what we see with what we have. Only 6 days into the new year and comparisons can be something that could get us off track for days, weeks, months or even years.

We can look at how someone that has grown their business, developed an amazing relationship with their spouse, landed an incredible job, or seemingly doesn't have money issues and start to wonder "what's wrong with me".

The problem with comparison is that we can waste a whole lot of time, energy, and effort either feeling bad about where we are or working to do what we think they have done to get what they have got.

If there are people you admire, there's nothing wrong with seeking out information from them - getting some advcie to see if they have any strategies, tips, tools that you can use to improve your situation. However, if your comparisons lead you to get off track with your own goals, feel bad about who you are or what you've accomplished, you need to immediately stop focusing on them and start focusing on you.

As we work on designing the life we truly want to live, it's important that we learn from those with green grass, but stay true to our authenic goals and our own authentic self.
But I don't think we all believe it.

Why do I think this? Because people tell me all the time when I ask about the progress towards their goals: "It's too hard".

It's January 5th and some people have already decided that the goals they set for this new year are too hard to achieve. They've started to do the work and have now opted to either adjust their goal to something smaller or give up all together.

Does any of this sound familiar?

It's too hard to not buy something even though I'm supposed to be getting out of debt.
It's too hard to find time to work on my book even though I want to be a published author.
It's too hard to let go of the anger so I can begin to heal my relationship with my spouse.
It's too hard to stop spending endless hours on the internet and my smartphone when my children are begging for attention.
It's too hard to finish my education so I can get that promotion I said I wanted.
It's too hard to make it to the gym so I can reach my fitness goals.
It's too hard to stick to the training schedule so I can run the 5k, 10k, half marathon, or marathon.
It's too hard to organize my closet and keep it clean so I can save time and be neat.
It's too hard to buy groceries and cook for my children (and me) so they (and me) can eat healthier.
It's too hard to .... do you have anything that could finish this sentence?

However, when you talk to people who said it was hard but they did it anyway...they will tell you that it was always worth it.

Remind yourself of this every day...the work it takes to get your goal is always worth it!
As we end the 4th day of the New Year, it's important to remember that life should also be an adventure.

Check out his quote:

A man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints. ~ Wilfred Peterson

What routine do you need to break? Is it time for you to shake things up? It's so easy for our days to turn into weeks, and the weeks into months, and months into years doing the same thing day after day. It has to be a conscious choice to be <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">adventurous. But how can you do that?

They key to keeping adventure in your life is realizing that adventure is relative. For some, it could mean taking a few months to travel around the world, for others, it could mean trying a new food the next time they eat out. What would it be for you?

The quote above shows that adding adventure to your life can be simple, yet highly impactful. Picking back up a hobby you've let fall away, making regular appointments to meet up with your friends, or even changing that hairstyle you've had for the past 5 or 10 years could all qualify as an adventure.

Adding small (or big) adventures to your life gives you energy, excitement and a feeling of being alive - not just living. Now is the time to take a look at how you can infuse more adventure into your life.
It's day three and I'm sure that some people have already abandoned some resolutions they made just a few short days ago. That thought led me to the word for today: Endurance.

Your success is directly tied to your ability to endure. When you feel like giving up, abandoning your plan, or letting your success slip away, you have a decision to make. Do you throw in the towel or do you endure? Endurance is defined: the ability or strength to continue or last, despite fatigue, stress, or other adverse conditions.
If you are working to get out of debt, do you endure passing on those new shoes, saying no to a night out with friends, and giving up your daily latte? Looking to improve your fitness level? Are you willing to endure working out <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">regularly, cutting back on calories and getting enough rest?
What about other people's opinions? When you are ready to do something great, there will be some that won't agree with you, who may even try to hold you back. Will you be able to endure - stand strong - perhaps even distance yourself from those people?

Yep - it's day 3 of the new year and some people have already abandoned their resolutions. Are you one of them?

I've heard so many people talk about what they want to accomplish this year. They want changes in their career, finances, health or life balance - but the reality is - if you want something different you have to make different choices. My question for you is what choice will you make today that will have a significant impact on your goals for the coming year?

I decided to make a choice around my health and fitness. Last year was my best year ever in my business, however, I got out of balance and let my fitness goals take a back seat.

Has that ever happened to you - you got so focused on one area of your life that you begin to fall short in others? If so, you know you have to make choices around your priorities and what you are willing to do to get things back on track.

That's why I decided to start off my new year with a real commitment to focusing on my business and my health. The great news about what I do is that my business is mobile. So I've decided to travel across the country. For the next four weeks, I'll be making my wellness a priority at The Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge in Malibu, CA.

Many of you know I spent 4 weeks at their location in Utah a couple of years ago. It was such an incredible experience that gave me the tools I needed to put my health first. And that's what I'm doing in 2011. It's exciting and I'm looking forward to what these 4 weeks will bring.

That brings me back to you - and your choices. What will you choose today that will have a positive impact on your success?
This is a BRAND new competition where I asked you guys to pitch me your business ideas for the chance to win $5,000 of start-up capital. I hand-selected these winners because of the confidence and passion I felt while watching their video pitch and just getting a sense of what felt right.
Our 1st place winner is Renee Preis, taking home $5,000 to start her business. And in 2nd place, Julie Matthews took home a free copy of my Online Success Blueprint 2.0 -- my fully upgraded version. Congratulations Renee and Julie!

Doreen Rainey and Liz Lange

I'm hanging out this week in Las Vegas at the Wynn Hotel attending Ali Brown's Shine Event. This three day conference is for women entrepreneurs who are looking to start or grow their business.

It's been a great time of learning, connecting with friends, and also enjoying some of what Las Vegas has to offer - especially one of my favorite restaurants on the strip...The Burger Bar at the Mandolay Bay. I love, love, love their veggie burger and sweet potato fries!

One of the keynote speakers at this event was Liz Lange - founder and Creative Director of Liz Lange Maternity. What I loved about her story was that she saw a need and decided to become the one to fill it. Noticing that some of her pregnant friends didn't shop at maternity stores, but rather tried to make regular clothes in a bigger size work, Liz was the first fashion designer to create chic, slim fitted, fashionable maternity clothes. In listening to her talk, I came away with 3 important points for achieving business success.

1. When you create something new, most people will tell you it won't work. At the time she decided to start her fashion line, maternity clothes were an afterthought. She talked to several retailers and experts in the field who said it would never work because women don't care how they look when they are pregnant. She chose to ignore the experts and stuck to her vision. The result: she forever changed an industry.

2. What if someone else does it? When she felt like giving up, she kept coming back to that question. What if she opened up a fashion magazine and saw someone else being successful with her idea?. That's what kept her going. When you latch on to your idea, passion, and goals, giving up is not an option.

3. Refuse to define yourself with what you can't do. Liz experienced a whole list of "can't" when building her business. She wasn't a designer, didn't sew, and didn't sketch. However, she chose to focus on what she could do - and took action.

When it comes to what you want to do - whether it's in your career, business or personal life, these are 3 points you want to always consider. In Liz's case, these were mantras that led her to create a business now worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

But the best part? I got to give her a personal "thank you" for her inspiring message when I stepped on the elevator at the Wynn to go to my room. There she was. She was just as gracious and nice in person as she was on stage. And yes, the picture is from inside the elevator!

Thanks Liz for sharing your experience and your wisdom.

That book you've been writing. That degree you've been wanting. That project that could change your career. That budget that could get your finances in order. That conversation that could repair a relationship. That business plan you started. That closet you were cleaning out. That vegetable garden you've been planting.

What do you have in your life that's undone? You know...those things that we talk about. Those things that we start but never finish. The very things that we have invested some of our time, money and resources into. Those things we SAY are important, but our actions prove otherwise.

When it comes to getting those items done, two options come to mind.

Option #1

You can take the approach that "Sometimes, done is better than perfect." Want to write a book? Stop waiting for a burst of creativity or a large block of time. On your next lunch break, pull out paper and pen or open up Word and start writing. As someone who has written and published several fiction books, I've discovered a great button on the keyborad. It's called "delete". If you don't like what you've written, you can just delete it. But you can't delete what you don't write.

Been putting off a difficult conversation? Go ahead and set a time to talk or just call them up. You can start with "I don't know exactly what to say, but we need to talk. I feel..."

Want to plant a garden? Stop looking at that plot of land in the backyard and go to your local nursery and ask how to plant a few of your favorites indoors or in a small area outside. Buy the soil, the container, some seeds, and start planting.

Unfortunately, we can get so caught up in doing it right, making it perfect, having the best setting, or wanting to only do something when we know we can "give it the attention it needs", that days, weeks, months and years go by. So, I say you go with the theory that "done can be better than perfect" and get moving on your project today!

Option #2

Let it go. Simply decide that you are no longer interested in that goal and release yourself of the burden. Maybe you wanted to write a book, but now you don't. Maybe you wanted to plant a vegetable garden, but your local "Whole Foods" is serving you just fine. Maybe you wanted to finish school, but at this point, it's no longer a priority for you. If that's the case, give yourself permission to let it go and move on.

Who cares what people may think? It's your life, and you have the right to change your mind.

No matter which option you choose, the good news is that you can finally take that project and stick a fork in it...because it will be done!
They have been wanting to achieve a goal for a while, but haven't made any real progress towards it. They want to move forward, they want to take action, but find their feet stuck in quicksand.
One of the great talents that Valorie Burton has is helping people get unstuck. She shares some reasons we get stuck - and some strategies for finally moving forward.
