Sitting Next to Donald Trump

Doreen & Carolyn
While I haven't had the pleasure of sitting next to the Trumpster and getting business tips (yet), I did have the honor of the next best thing. I got some great business strategies and life advice from the woman who did sit next to Donald Trump - Caroyln Kepcher.
Carolyn is the former COO for The Trump Organization and she is also the woman who sat at his side for 5 seasons on The Apprentice.  I met Carolyn at theNorthern Virginia Women's Business Conference.  There, she shared insightful tips on what it takes to succeed while being true to yourself and being there for your family.
Her book, Carolyn 101: Business Lessons from The Apprentice Straight Shooter, also offers some valuable lessons on how to get ahead in the business world. I wanted to share some of my take-a-ways from her with you.
  • You're the one in charge of your learning curve. In this day and age, we don't always have the luxury of having someone walk us through something step by step - holding our hand every step of the way.  You may get the basics, but the rest is up to you.  Take responsibility for your own education, training, and learning.  Be proactive within your organization, in your industry, and with your career.
  • When someone hands you an opportunity, don't be afraid to take it. At 25, Carolyn had never run a golf club - or even knew much about golf, but when the opportunity presented itself, she jumped on it and suggested to Trump that he give her the job of General Manager for the Blair Hall Country Club. He said yes.
  • Balancing work and home life is not a moral issue.  No one but you has any right to say whether what you are doing is good or bad.  You have got to decide what will work best for you and your family. And always talk with your boss about what that is.  Don't expect people to read your mind about what you need to live a "balanced" life.
More of Carolyn's insights, as well as how she managed to rise through the ranks of the Trump Organization at such a young age, can be found in her book.

Guess Who I Met in the Elevator?

Doreen Rainey and Liz Lange
I'm hanging out this week in Las Vegas at the Wynn Hotel attending Ali Brown's Shine Event. This three day conference is for women entrepreneurs who are looking to start or grow their business.

It's been a great time of learning, connecting with friends, and also enjoying some of what Las Vegas has to offer - especially one of my favorite restaurants on the strip...The Burger Bar at the Mandolay Bay. I love, love, love their veggie burger and sweet potato fries!

One of the keynote speakers at this event was Liz Lange - founder and Creative Director of Liz Lange Maternity. What I loved about her story was that she saw a need and decided to become the one to fill it. Noticing that some of her pregnant friends didn't shop at maternity stores, but rather tried to make regular clothes in a bigger size work, Liz was the first fashion designer to create chic, slim fitted, fashionable maternity clothes. In listening to her talk, I came away with 3 important points for achieving business success.

1. When you create something new, most people will tell you it won't work. At the time she decided to start her fashion line, maternity clothes were an afterthought. She talked to several retailers and experts in the field who said it would never work because women don't care how they look when they are pregnant. She chose to ignore the experts and stuck to her vision. The result: she forever changed an industry.

2. What if someone else does it? When she felt like giving up, she kept coming back to that question. What if she opened up a fashion magazine and saw someone else being successful with her idea?. That's what kept her going. When you latch on to your idea, passion, and goals, giving up is not an option.

3. Refuse to define yourself with what you can't do. Liz experienced a whole list of "can't" when building her business. She wasn't a designer, didn't sew, and didn't sketch. However, she chose to focus on what she could do - and took action.

When it comes to what you want to do - whether it's in your career, business or personal life, these are 3 points you want to always consider. In Liz's case, these were mantras that led her to create a business now worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

But the best part? I got to give her a personal "thank you" for her inspiring message when I stepped on the elevator at the Wynn to go to my room. There she was. She was just as gracious and nice in person as she was on stage. And yes, the picture is from inside the elevator!

Thanks Liz for sharing your experience and your wisdom.

Stick a Fork In It

Is it done?

That book you've been writing. That degree you've been wanting. That project that could change your career. That budget that could get your finances in order. That conversation that could repair a relationship. That business plan you started. That closet you were cleaning out. That vegetable garden you've been planting.

What do you have in your life that's undone? You know...those things that we talk about. Those things that we start but never finish. The very things that we have invested some of our time, money and resources into. Those things we SAY are important, but our actions prove otherwise.

When it comes to getting those items done, two options come to mind.

Option #1

You can take the approach that "Sometimes, done is better than perfect." Want to write a book? Stop waiting for a burst of creativity or a large block of time. On your next lunch break, pull out paper and pen or open up Word and start writing. As someone who has written and published several fiction books, I've discovered a great button on the keyborad. It's called "delete". If you don't like what you've written, you can just delete it. But you can't delete what you don't write.

Been putting off a difficult conversation? Go ahead and set a time to talk or just call them up. You can start with "I don't know exactly what to say, but we need to talk. I feel..."

Want to plant a garden? Stop looking at that plot of land in the backyard and go to your local nursery and ask how to plant a few of your favorites indoors or in a small area outside. Buy the soil, the container, some seeds, and start planting.

Unfortunately, we can get so caught up in doing it right, making it perfect, having the best setting, or wanting to only do something when we know we can "give it the attention it needs", that days, weeks, months and years go by. So, I say you go with the theory that "done can be better than perfect" and get moving on your project today!

Option #2

Let it go. Simply decide that you are no longer interested in that goal and release yourself of the burden. Maybe you wanted to write a book, but now you don't. Maybe you wanted to plant a vegetable garden, but your local "Whole Foods" is serving you just fine. Maybe you wanted to finish school, but at this point, it's no longer a priority for you. If that's the case, give yourself permission to let it go and move on.

Who cares what people may think? It's your life, and you have the right to change your mind.

No matter which option you choose, the good news is that you can finally take that project and stick a fork in it...because it will be done!

Get Unstuck

One of the common challenges my clients face are finding ways to get unstuck.  They have been wanting to achieve a goal for a while, but haven't made any real progress towards it.  They want to move forward, they want to take action, but find their feet stuck in quicksand.

One of the great talents that Valorie Burton has is helping people get unstuck.  She was one of the incredible speakers at the 2010 Get RADICAL Women's Conference and here are some highlights from her speech.  She shares some reasons we get stuck - and some strategies for finally moving forward.

Is Selfish a Dirty Word?

One of the biggest challenges people usually face is making decisions that are in their own best interest. Some believe that when they "put themselves first", "focus on their own interest", or "make a priority of their welfare", they are acting in an unacceptable way. They are acting selfishly.

By definition, selfish means concerned with one's own interest, benefits and welfare - regardless of others. Is there any surprise that the last thing people want to be labeled is the "s" word. The challenge comes in when we go too far on the other end of the spectrum - selfless. Giving in to the needs of everyone, everywhere, every time - regardless of your own priorities or what's best for you.

If you consistently ignore your own wants and needs for the sake of others, you can become resentful, bitter, and lose yourself. By continually allowing others to dictate how you spend your time, your energy and your resources, you may quickly find yourself completely drained. And the result? You have nothing left to give.

However, when you take care of yourself, investing in those things that make you happy, give you joy, that are important to you, and help you become your best person, it can be a win-win. You would have fostered fulfillment and satisfaction within yourself , while at the same time, allowing those around you to benefit from it. How? Because when you are at your best, you have more to give -and with a better attitude.

What are some ways you can begin the process of investing in you?
  • Say no when necessary.
  • Make your health a priority.
  • Set aside time to focus on you.
  • Spend time on your hobbies.

Only One Word - WOW!!

The Get RADICAL Women's Conference this past Saturday was amazing.  Women from all across the country - and Canada, Europe and Israel - joined me for a day of inspiration, motivation and fun!  The speakers were incredible and the energy was off the charts.

Rhonda Britten talked about being fearless, Valorie Burton talked about getting unstuck, Kim Snider shared how to make money and KEEP money, Marshawn Evans talked about reinventing yourself, and I shared life lessons from training and running a half marathon.

And, of course, Jillian Michaels rocked the house! Answering questions from the audience, she gave great advice and insight on how to live your best life.  She is genuine, authenic, caring, fun, and has a true heart for helping people reach their goals - physically and beyond.  Here's a short clip of us chatting it up before we hit the stage:

Our RADICAL Woman of the Year Award Winner - Amy Barnes - told her incredible story of triump and touched every woman in the room. I'll definitely be sharing more about her in an upcoming post.  She is definitely a woman who exemplified what it means to Get RADICAL!

I'll be sharing tips and strategies from our speakers over the next couple of weeks. All of them had great information to help us get unstuck, move forward, and create the life - and the lifestyle - we all deserve.

Turn Setbacks Into Greenbacks

I've known Willie Jolley for years and it's amazing to me how he is always able to see opportunity in any circumstance.  Top companies use Willie time and time again to help their organization foster an attitude of excellence.

His latest book, Turn Setbacks Into Greenbacks, helps people take the challenges, hardships, and disappointments they've experienced in the past couple of years and position themselves to come back greater and stronger.

Here are 4 great tips he shares from the book:

Focusing Your Vision:
Where you focus your energy determines where you will go. Focus your vision on what you want, despite the setback, and use the setback for what it really is: a transitional period.

Making a Decision:
Both success and failure are decisions. The truth, is successful people choose to be successful. Once your vision is in place, you need to decide you're going to win despite the setback!

Taking Action:
A decision without action is simply an illusion. By taking action on a decision, you're also taking responsibility for the setback. Remember, you might not be responsible for getting knocked down, but you are responsible for getting back up. Only those who act achieve their goals.

Keeping the Desire:
Desire is the degree of energy you're willing to exert in order to reach your goal. Decide how badly you want to achieve the goal and then keep going after it until you achieve it.

The Changing Face of Leaders

I’m reading Tribes by Seth Godin, a fantastic book about what it means to be a leader today – both in an organization and in your own business. There’s so much good advice and he provides several concepts that really require you to examine how you currently approach your work.

There's no doubt that technology has drastically challenged and changed the status quo, and those who still fight against the new way business, marketing, and careers are developed stand to lose.  The book is filled with stories and insights on how to create the type of organization that thrives in this new global world where information is readily accessible. He shares how people have done it right - and how some have tried and missed the boat.

One of my favorite quotes that is in this book is around using Tribes and the accompany leadership skills to design the life – and the lifestyle – you want. He says, “You don’t have enough time to be unhappy and mediocre. It’s not just pointless, it’s painful. Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don’t need to escape from.”

This quote embodies my coaching platform of Get RADICAL – which is to define success for yourself and then become bold and courageous enough to go after it. Coaching is one of the ways I work with individuals to help them deepen the learning about who they are and what they want, and then create an action plan that allows them to pursue their goals.

Are You Living Fearlessly?

The power of emotional fear cannot be denied, or ignored. And Rhonda Britten’s life mission is to help people understand fear, become friends with fear (yes, friends!) and then kick fears butt!

An Emmy winning life coach from Starting Over and Celebrity Fit Club, Rhonda understand the paralyzing effect fear can have on people. Watching her mother killed at the hands of her father, and then seeing him turn the gun on himself, left 14 year old Rhonda overwhelmed with fear. But she tackled those emotions to design, create and live a powerful and fulfilling life. And she now shares with others how to do the same through her Fearless Living Institute.

In my 10 minute interview with Rhonda, she gets you fired up about what’s possible if you don’t allow fear to make your decisions for you. In this short conversation with Rhonda, I KNOW your life will be impacted.

And to experience the full force of Rhonda, join her, and other incredible speakers at the 2010 Get RADICAL Women’s Conference.

Branding. Confidence. Networking. Reflection.

When it comes to success in the boardroom (or in life):

  • What does your personal brand say about you?
  • How would you rate your confidence level?
  • Are you maximizing the power of networking?
  • Do you understand the impact of reflection?
These are the questions Marshawn Evans, author of SKIRTS in the Boardroom, addressed when I interviewed her for her upcoming appearance at the Get RADICAL Women's Conference.

Check out the 10 minute  interview I did with Marshawn as she shares a little about herself, strategies to consider when you are ready to grow your career or your business. And the one thing you should continually do to keep you on the path to success.

Becoming a Champion

At some point in our lives, we've all witnessed it. For some of us, we have experienced it. It is the thrill of being a champion. Being THE winner. Being #1. Hearing the applause of those around you as they celebrate your accomplishment.

It's in those moments that we look back on all the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears it took to get there and admit that it was worth it.

But if you haven't had those moments lately, it could be because you have strayed away from doing the hard work. To me, being a champion is the easy part. It's BECOMING a champion where the road gets tough.

Becoming a champion means that you're in training...and training requires two things: Commitment and Discipline. If you've been lacking in one, or both, of these areas lately, I would venture to guess that you haven't stood in the winner's circle in quite a while.

What championship are you working towards? Is it a college degree? Getting in shape? Eliminating your credit card debt? Starting your own business? Perhaps it's getting a new job, going after a promotion, or saving for a house. Whatever it is you are going for - now is the time to do an honest gut check on your commitment and your discipline.

Ask yourself: What does it really take to get what I want?

Do you need to get up early? Stay up late? Turn off the TV? Cut up the credit cards? Skip dessert? Go to the gym daily? Take on an new project at work? Do more professional networking?

My challenge to you is to choose one area where you're going for the gold. Pick one goal that you've let a lack of commitment and lack of discipline get you off track. Now, decide to recommit yourself and to have daily discipline towards reaching that goal.

Grab a pen and paper right now and write down exactly what you will do to move toward your goal - then read it every day to remind you of what action you must take . By doing so, it won't be long before you'll once again feel the thrill of victory!

Where is the Love?

I've been on the road the past couple of weeks and have a few observations about traveling today.

I don't think anyone would argue the point that travel isn't as fun as it use to be.  Dealing with heightened security, trying to figure out what 3ozs of lotion looks like, and making sure your socks match as you take your shoes off and walk through the detector, isn't the best way to start your business trip or vacation.

Flights choices are dwindling and a non-stop can be golden.  The flights can be oversold and the gate agent can be a little testy to say the least.  And $25 to check 1 bag?  Come on, a family of 4 could pay over $100 each way!

So, it's easy for me to see how frustrations can run high and patience can be fleeting.  But let's remember that we're all in the same boat.  We're all trying to get somewhere and doing our best to maintain a positive attitude. However, some people don't see it that way.  Because of that, I've developed a few pet peeves over the past months that I'd like all of you frequent flyers to consider:
  • When they ask you not to put your coat in the overhead until everyone has had a chance to put their carryon up there.  DON'T PUT YOUR COAT IN THE OVERHEAD!  What if you were the one trying to squeeze your carryon in the bin but couldn't because somone's coat, hat, gloves and scarf are already there.
  • If you are not in the group they are boarding...don't try to board!  You hold up the line and irritate the gate agent.  I don't like to wait either (especially since I know overhead space is at a premium because some inconsiderate passenger has stuffed his coat up there!). But do us all a favor and just wait your turn.
  • Yes, really, step inside your row and let others pass while you try to pull out your DVD player, iPod, book and magazine.
  • And yes, there are some people that move a little slower than others when going through the security.  But be patient.  We were once beginners too!
So as you travel in and out of airports, remember, we're all in the same boat (or cabin!).  Show a little love!

Are You Part of the Herd?

When it comes to money:
  • Are you a part of the herd?
  • Do you have a sense of comfort or are you filled with anxiety?
  • Are you clear about how the system we live in rewards people when it comes to money?
How you answer these questions could determine how successful you will be in making, growing, and keeping, your money.

These are the questions Kim Snider, author of How to Be the Family CFO, addressed when I interviewed her for her upcoming appearance at the Get RADICAL Women's Conference.

If you have been challenged with your finances, listen to this interview to get a taste of the financial advice Kim will be sharing with us at this event.  As one of the amazing speakers for this incredible day, her financial expertise will put you on the road to financial success - not just for today, but for the rest of your life.

Check out the 6 minute interview as Kim shares a little about herself, what it means to get "radical" with your money, and what it means if you're a part of the herd.

The First Challenge

You will do more than you ever thought possible when the reward of "doing" surpasses the comfort of status quo.

I saw a perfect example of this when I watched the season premier of The Biggest Loser. As soon as the teams (made up of couples) got to the ranch, they immediately had a challenge.

They had not met Jillian or Bob. They hadn't been to their rooms. They hadn't had a chance to meet and talk with each other. Instead, they went straight to the gym and, as a team, were told that they had to ride 26.2 miles on a stationary bike.

Now, all of the contestants were morbidly obese. Several men weighed over 400 pounds, and one weighed over 500 pounds. These were people who hadn't walked a slow mile in years - maybe decades. So the idea of pedaling that long seemed impossible.

I could almost hear the excuses and doubt playing in their heads at that moment:
  • I haven't ridden a bike in years
  • I can't ride that long
  • I'm too big
  • I'm not strong enough
  • This is too much
  • This is too hard
But then the host, Alison Sweeney, said something that changed everything.  She informed them that the 2 teams that finished the bike ride last would have to immediately leave the ranch and return home.

The look on the contestants face suddenly changed. The doubt turned to determination. The excuses went from "I can't" to "I must". The idea of being sent home on the first day they arrived at the ranch became their driving force. The reward (staying at the ranch) became stronger the status quo (or the excuses).

The contestants climbed on those bikes and pushed through the pain, the discomfort, the sweat, the cramps, and that little seat, to get the reward they so desperately wanted - the opportunity to stay in the game and change their life.  While 2 teams did go home, every person did more than they ever thought possible.

What about you? What are willing to do to stay in the game and change your life? When will you see that the rewards of reaching your goals and having the life - and the lifestyle - you want is worth breaking out of your status quo.

Happy New Decade!

Happy New Decade!

It seems like we were just talking about how the world would collapse with Y2K, and now, ten years later, we enter into a new decade.

I hope that you enjoyed your holidays as much as I did.  I had the chance to spend time with family and friends, do some shopping (both for gifts and for me!), and host Christmas dinner for 20.  And of course, as I rung in the New Year, I couldn't help but think about what I wanted to accomplish in 2010.

I call it my Top Ten for 2010.  Ten goals that revolve around my business, health, and finances, as well as goals around becoming more involved in helping others, including doing more with my favorite charity, the Innocence Project. Some of my Top Ten are small, while others take my breath away, but they are all meaningful to me.  Focusing on what's important to me, I selected goals that reflect my self-defined success.

Now, I've heard many people say they don't believe in "resolutions", and while I tend to believe those are usually the people who don't stick to them, I will agree that you don't have to wait for a new year to reevaluate your life goals, make the necessary adjustments and look for a fresh start.  But come on, January 1st? That's the mother of all "fresh start" days. So, call it what you want - resolution, goal, new beginning, fresh perspective, future plans. But go ahead and make a few goals - maybe even a Top Ten!

And then once you make them, create a plan of action to make it happen.  Find the resources you need.  Get the support you need.  Get the education you need.  Get focused.  But if you don't quite reach them this year, don't worry.  You've got the whole decade ahead of you.
